Excelsior: Memoir of a Forester
Laurence C. Walker, Lacy Hunt Professor, Emeritus, served as the first dean of the School of Forestry at Stephen F. Austin State University. Larry tells of happy and sad times as a member of the profession of forestry, opening the narrative with his enrollment at the old Penn State Forest School at Mont Alto, his escape from the inner city, then of his work with the U.S. Forest Service, graduate studies at Yale and Syracuse, trudging through the Schwartzwald (Black Forest) in WWII, teaching and research at the University of Georgia and assignments in the forests of every continent (except Antarctica, of course).
